Progress post

How about something other than jewelry?  I hadn't been sewing much because I was busy doing some cleaning and organizing, but then I got to work on this striped zone front gown, modeled after a gown at the Met.  Everything has mostly been going well except the sleeves, which have been causing issues. Mostly because I tried something new that didn't work.  I hope to finish this gown this weekend!

Here are how it looks so far (though now I've got shoulder straps on).

  1. This looks so amazing! I have been envisioning a dress like this for myself! I wonder if I could make a really simple one, as my sewing skills are really not up there!

    1. Thank you! You could do a regular anglaise in stripes and maybe use trim to make it look like a zone front? Zone fronts are tricky, I think... Good luck!

  2. This is fantastic! I love how you casually just say "Oh, I'm sewing this" and then post gorgeous pictures. Really, WOW. It's also really neat how you've picked out a brighter fabric that is probably very close to the original dress's colour when it was first made. I am going to start work on a dress this winter, and am wondering what process you most recommend for sewing tight sleeves. Just lots of tests? Or would you recommend trying to find a pattern that has similar sleeves? Thanks for keeping this top-notch costume blog! I get excited every time there's a new post :D

    1. Aw, thank you! :-) I found this fabric ages ago and it's been sitting there waiting for me to do something with it! The stripes are narrower than the Met dress, but that's ok.

I'm not sure I'm the best one to give you advice on sleeves - I tried doing two-part sleeves on this one that were a total fail. So I reverted to a sleeve pattern that usually works for me. I think I would try a similar pattern first, and once you get it to work, maybe try modifiying that!

Thanks again for your kind words!
