DragonCon 2003

DragonCon 2003 was the year of Moulin Rouge and Lord of the Box Office - and I got to wear Padme again, which made absolutely no impact at the Star Wars Costume Contest. ;-) This is also where I met Gen (she was our Jack Sparrow for LotBO), who I am still good friends with!

We won Audience Favorite!

Balticon 2003

Next up, Balticon 2003. By then I'd finished my Padme embroidered costume from Episode II, and I was getting into Lord of the Rings - this is the first iteration of my Arwen riding costume. :-)  We also premiered "Lord of the Box Office" which was added to and performed to much acclaim at DragonCon 2003. :-)

Wizard of Oz Dorothy & Scarecrow

Add this to the list of costumes I need better pictures of! I made these for Halloween 2003.  I spent 2 weeks hot-gluing sequins on a pair of thrift store shoes. I, of course, want to redo them with smaller sequins and better, more accurate shoes. Oh well.

Lord of the Rings Arwen Riding costume

This is the first Lord of the Rings costume I made. I redid parts of it after seeing the real one on exhibit. It was made out of a greenish gray suede fabric that I found on ebay. The collar decoration was done by hand with puffy fabric paint, and the princess seams are over stitched with a baseball stitch, like the real costume. My costume zips up the front with an invisible zipper and is laced with a gray china silk sash that threads through the sculpey buckle that I made to match the real one. The undersleeves are made from metallic crinkle silk organza, and a very close match to the real costume.

My friends and I did a skit for Balticon called "Lord of the Box" office, which went over really well. We added to it, and then did it at the DragonCon 2003 masquerade. We won audience favorite! Here's a picture and a video.

Padme's Blue Tatooine Costume

This was one off my first difficult costumes - it was started early on, abandoned and put away in a closet, and then brought back out when I had a better idea of how to tackle the embroidery. Near as I can tell, I made this in 2003. The "poncho" is made of blue wool - the sleeves are embroidered in a machine satin-stitch with yellow and orange thread. The "fleur de lis shapes" are appliques that were largely embroidered by hand. The neck and sleeves are hand embroidered with thin knitting yarn. The circle in front is done with knitting yarn, fabric paint, and hand embroidery. The ribbons in the front of the gown are silk, and the beads are African Trade beads. The underdress is hand-crinkled, hand-dyed Thai silk.
